How long do joint injections last?
It varies by the injection and the joint. Cortisone relief usually lasts a few weeks to a few months; gel (hyaluronic acid) can last several months in the knee; PRP works gradually and, when it helps, may last longer. Your physician will set realistic expectations for your case.
Are joint injections painful?
Most people tolerate them well. The skin is numbed first, and image guidance helps place the needle accurately, so you usually feel pressure more than sharp pain. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.
Does insurance cover joint injections?
Most insurance plans cover medically necessary cortisone and gel injections. PRP is usually considered elective and paid out of pocket. Our team can check your coverage before your visit.
How often can I get a joint injection?
Cortisone is generally limited to about three or four times per joint per year to protect the joint. If you find yourself needing injections often, that’s a sign to look at longer-lasting options rather than repeating the same shot.
