We offer Sacroiliac Joint Fusion, which is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat sacroiliac joint pain.

Sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion is a minimally invasive surgery that joins the sacrum and pelvis with small implants to stop painful motion in the SI joint. It is considered for adults whose SI joint pain is confirmed by diagnostic numbing injections and has not improved after months of nonsurgical care.

Who is a candidate for SI joint fusion?

You may be a candidate if:

  • You have ongoing low back or buttock pain that did not get better with nonsurgical treatment such as physical therapy, medicine or injections (Cleveland Clinic)
  • Your exam points to the SI joint, and other pain sources such as the lumbar spine or hip have been checked
  • Diagnostic SI joint blocks confirm the joint as the pain source. A Medicare coverage policy for SI joint procedures (CMS LCD L39475) counts a diagnostic block as positive when it gives at least 75% relief of your usual pain

Fusion is usually considered only after these steps. It is not a first treatment for SI joint pain.

What to expect

According to Cleveland Clinic:

  • The surgery is done under general anesthesia and usually takes about an hour.
  • Through small incisions, the surgeon places titanium implants across the joint to fuse it.
  • It is usually outpatient, so you go home the same day. You may need a walker or cane at first.
  • Early limits include no lifting over 10 pounds and not sitting for more than 45 minutes at a time. Most people return to their usual activities in three to four months.

What you pay for SI joint fusion depends on your plan, your deductible and whether you meet the plan’s medical criteria. We check your benefits and handle any prior authorization before scheduling.

Quick answers

How do I know my pain comes from the SI joint?

Your physician uses exam tests and then a diagnostic injection of numbing medicine into the SI joint under X-ray guidance. If your usual pain drops a lot while the medicine works, the joint is likely the source.

How long is recovery after SI joint fusion?

Most people walk the same day, sometimes with a walker or cane. Full recovery takes a few months, and most people return to their usual activities in three to four months, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Is SI joint fusion the same as an SI joint injection?

No. An SI joint injection places medicine into the joint to test it or to calm inflammation. Fusion is a surgery that uses implants to permanently stop motion in the joint.

Do you offer SI joint fusion in New Jersey?

Yes. You can be evaluated at our Clifton, NJ office, which accepts PPO and POS plans and personal injury / auto PIP claims. Call 732-630-7246.

The sacroiliac joint is the joint that connects the sacrum and the ilium in the pelvis. This joint transfers weight and forces from the upper body to the lower body during movement. When this joint is damaged or inflamed, it can result in significant pain and discomfort, limiting mobility and affecting the quality of life.

This procedure is a minimally invasive option, which means that it requires only a small incision, resulting in less blood loss, lower risk of complications, and faster recovery times than traditional open surgery. SI joint fusion may reduce pain for people whose pain is confirmed to come from the SI joint. Results vary from person to person.

Our experienced team of surgeons uses the latest technology and techniques to perform Sacroiliac Joint Fusion. We take the time to evaluate each patient’s individual needs and develop a customized treatment plan that is tailored to their specific situation.

If you are experiencing sacroiliac joint pain or discomfort, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our team to learn more about Sacroiliac Joint Fusion and how it can help you get back to living your life without pain.
