What a knee pain doctor does

A knee pain doctor’s first job is to find out why your knee hurts — because “knee pain” can come from cartilage wear, a meniscus tear, ligament damage, arthritis, tendon problems, or kneecap tracking issues, and each needs a different plan. Using a careful exam and imaging, our specialists identify the real source and match the treatment to it. Getting that diagnosis right is what separates lasting relief from temporary fixes.

Knee conditions we treat

How we treat knee pain

Our approach is step-up care: start with the least invasive option that can resolve the problem, and reserve surgery for when it’s truly needed. Depending on the cause, treatment may include activity guidance and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory measures, image-guided joint injections, PRP and regenerative options in appropriate cases, and — when a mechanical problem needs fixing — minimally invasive knee arthroscopy or surgery. Wondering whether PRP fits your knee? Our guide on whether PRP works for knee osteoarthritis walks through the evidence.

When should you see a knee doctor?

See a specialist if your knee pain has lasted more than a few weeks, keeps returning, swells, locks or gives way, or limits your walking, work, or sleep. Earlier evaluation usually means simpler treatment.

Seek prompt care if your knee has:
  • Sudden severe pain or an inability to bear weight after an injury
  • A knee that locks, buckles, or won’t straighten
  • Significant swelling, warmth, redness, or fever
These can signal a significant injury, gout, or infection rather than everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of doctor should I see for knee pain?

For knee pain that hasn’t resolved on its own, an orthopedic specialist or interventional pain physician is usually the right choice. They diagnose the specific cause and offer targeted treatments — from injections to minimally invasive surgery — rather than just managing symptoms.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Same-week evaluations are usually available at our NY and NJ offices. Call the location nearest you to schedule.

Will I need knee surgery?

Usually not. Most knee pain improves with non-surgical care such as physical therapy, injections, and regenerative options. Surgery is considered only when a mechanical problem needs fixing or conservative care hasn’t provided relief. When an operation is the right call, our ACL & knee surgeon handles it with minimally invasive techniques.

Do you take insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans and verify your coverage before your visit. We also treat work-injury and motor-vehicle-accident knee cases and can help with the required documentation.

Where are your offices located?

We have offices across New York and New Jersey, including Plainview, New Hyde Park, Ronkonkoma, and Yonkers, NY, and Clifton and Plainfield, NJ.

Knee Pain: Questions Patients Ask Us

How long does a cortisone shot last in the knee?

Relief usually begins within a few days and lasts anywhere from about six weeks to a few months — sometimes longer. How long it lasts depends on the cause and severity of your knee problem. Cortisone eases inflammation but doesn’t repair the joint, so we pair it with a longer-term plan to protect your knee.

How often can you get a cortisone shot?

Most specialists limit cortisone to roughly three to four times a year in the same joint, spaced at least six weeks apart, because too-frequent steroid injections can weaken cartilage over time. If you need shots often just to stay comfortable, that’s a signal to explore longer-lasting options like PRP or other treatments.

What can I do for knee arthritis besides replacement?

Quite a lot. Before joint replacement, many patients get lasting relief from physical therapy, weight and activity changes, anti-inflammatory care, cortisone or gel (hyaluronic acid) injections, PRP and regenerative options, and bracing. Replacement is a last resort — the goal is to keep your own knee working comfortably for as long as possible.
