What a rotator cuff doctor does
A shoulder specialist’s first job is to find out why your shoulder hurts — because “shoulder pain” can come from a rotator cuff strain or tear, impingement, bursitis, shoulder arthritis, a labral problem, or a frozen shoulder, and each needs a different plan. A key early clue is stiffness versus weakness: a frozen shoulder is mainly stiffness, while a rotator cuff tear is mainly weakness. Using a careful exam and imaging such as ultrasound or MRI, our specialists identify the real source and match the treatment to it. Getting that diagnosis right is what separates lasting relief from temporary fixes.
Shoulder conditions we treat
- Rotator cuff strains and tears
- Shoulder impingement and bursitis
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
- Shoulder arthritis
- Labral tears and shoulder instability
- Shoulder pain from work injuries and motor-vehicle accidents
Not sure which one you have? Our guide on telling a rotator cuff strain, tear, and frozen shoulder apart walks through the differences, and we explain why the shoulder often hurts more at night.
How we treat rotator cuff & shoulder pain
Our approach is step-up care: start with the least invasive option that can resolve the problem, and reserve surgery for when it’s truly needed. Depending on the cause, treatment may include activity guidance and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory measures, image-guided shoulder injections, PRP and regenerative options in appropriate cases, and — when a tear or mechanical problem needs fixing — minimally invasive rotator cuff repair. Many rotator cuff problems improve without an operation; our guide on treating a torn rotator cuff without surgery explains when that’s possible and when repair is the better path.

What kind of doctor should I see for rotator cuff or shoulder pain?
For shoulder pain that hasn’t resolved on its own, an orthopedic specialist or interventional pain physician is usually the right choice. They diagnose the specific cause — strain, tear, impingement, arthritis, or frozen shoulder — and offer targeted treatments, from injections to minimally invasive surgery, rather than just managing symptoms.
How do I know if my rotator cuff is torn or just strained?
The quickest clue is weakness versus soreness. A strain is mostly soreness with fairly normal movement, while a tear tends to cause weakness when lifting or reaching — and pain that is often worse at night. An exam and, when needed, an ultrasound or MRI confirm which one it is.
Will I need shoulder surgery?
Usually not. Most shoulder pain, including many rotator cuff problems and frozen shoulder, improves with non-surgical care such as physical therapy, injections, and regenerative options. Surgery is considered mainly for larger or complete tears or when conservative care hasn’t provided relief.
How soon can I get an appointment?
Same-week evaluations are usually available at our NY and NJ offices. Call the location nearest you to schedule.
Do you take insurance?
We accept most major insurance plans and verify your coverage before your visit. We also treat work-injury and motor-vehicle-accident shoulder cases and can help with the required documentation.
Rotator Cuff & Shoulder Pain: Questions Patients Ask Us
Can a torn rotator cuff heal without surgery?
Many partial tears improve without surgery. Physical therapy, activity changes, and targeted injections can relieve pain and rebuild strength, especially for smaller or partial tears. Full-thickness tears, or pain and weakness that don’t improve, may need surgical repair. An exam and imaging tell us which path fits your specific tear.
How do I know if my shoulder pain is a rotator cuff tear?
Rotator cuff tears often cause pain reaching overhead or behind your back, weakness lifting the arm, and a deep ache that worsens at night or when lying on that shoulder. A clicking or catching feeling is common too. These symptoms can overlap with other shoulder problems, so an exam and imaging confirm the diagnosis.
